The Energy Ministers of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) approved the establishment of the SADC Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (SACREEE). Namibia was confirmed as the host country of the Secreariat of the Centre. The decision was taken during the 34th meeting of SADC Energy Ministers, held in July in Johannesburg.
The Ministers commended the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) and Austrian Development Agency (ADA) for their contributions during the preparatory process of the centre.
Mr. Mahama Kappiah, Executive Director of ECREEE, welcomed the decision of the Ministers and confirmed his readiness to cooperate closely with the new centre. “We are sharing common challenges and opportunities in the sustainable energy sector. There is plenty of room for knowledge exchange and south-south technology transfer.”, said Mr. Kappiah.
