The Meeting of ECOWAS Energy Ministers on Friday, 24 March 2023 in Bissau, Guinea Bissau considered and adopted the updated ECOWAS Energy Policy, the ECOWAS Regional Electricity Code, and the ECOWAS Green Hydrogen Policy. This was based on the recommendations of the ECOWAS Energy Experts Meeting, which held from 22 -23 March 2023 in Bissau.
The ECOWAS Green Hydrogen Policy aims to position the ECOWAS region as one of the most competitive producers and suppliers of Green Hydrogen and its derivatives while addressing socio-economic growth and sustainable development of all ECOWAS Member States.
The ECOWAS Commissioner for Infrastructure, Energy and Digitalisation, in his welcome remarks at the meeting expressed his gratitude to the West African Science Service Centre on Climate Change and Adapted Landuse (WASCAL), and the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research for their support to ECREEE in the development of the ECOWAS Green Hydrogen Policy and in the quest to harness the region’s green hydrogen potential.
These regional policies will be recommended to the ECOWAS Council of Ministers, and the Authority of ECOWAS Heads of State and Government for adoption. The regional policies represent a voluntary contribution of ECOWAS to the attainment of the SEforALL objectives in West Africa.
