The United Nations Development Programme and the Climate Parliament, with the generous support of the European Commission held a meeting in Dakar, Senegal on 1 and 2 June 2016 within the scope of their programme for Parliamentary Action for Renewable Energy (PARE). The meeting brought together MPs of the climate parliament of three West African priority countries that are Benin, Cote d’Ivoire and Senegal, as well as may national and regional and international stakeholders involved in the promotion and development of the renewable energy sector in the region. The meeting was opened by the Honorable President of the Senegalese Parliament Mr. Moustapha Niasse.
The focus of the meeting was to share best practices and options to set up a more enabling environment for private and public investment in renewable energy through the strengthening of the regulatory, legal and institutional frameworks. ECREEE was thus invited to take part of the meeting and present the National Renewable Energy Action Plans (NREAPs) of Benin, Cote d’Ivoire and Senegal and discuss with the MPs some of the actions that could be taken by them through their Action Plan for Renewable Energy to further catalyze the adoption process of key legislation or ensure adequate implementation of adopted legislation. In addition ECREEE presented to the MPs policy instruments that are being used in the region but also at the international level to promote the deployment of renewable energy technologies.
The PARE programme is looking to further collaborate with ECREEE on complementary actions in the three target countries in order to more effectively accelerate the transition to renewable energies.
