Research Program

Africa’s urbanization is up 90% in 20 years, driving global energy demand. Climate change worsens living conditions. Infrastructure, industry, and cooling solutions are needed for 1 billion in Sub-Saharan Africa. Africa must double its energy supply by 2040 to meet social and economic needs. Africa’s renewable energy potential exceeds the 2040 demand by 1000 times. The transition should prioritize energy supply and pollution reduction as well as preventing resource conflicts. A holistic Nexus approach is vital to secure water, food, sustainable agriculture, and energy production while acknowledging the interdependence of these sectors. Technology transfer and research are important pillars for a better understanding of these issues and for proposing solutions adapted to the West African.

Technology Transfer and Research Program aims to provide sustainable energy solutions for improving the living conditions of rural populations and cities and to support the competitiveness of the economy through adapted models, appropriate technologies, and the production of quality knowledge specific to West Africa.

Technology Transfer and Research Program aligns with ECOWAS sustainable energy policies: ECOWAS Renewable Energy Policy, ECOWAS Energy Efficiency Policy, ECOWAS Bioenergy Policy, Gender Mainstreaming in ECOWAS Energy Access, ECOWAS Green Hydrogen Strategy and Policy Framework, ECOWAS Updated Energy Policy, ECOWAS Climate Strategy.

The activities are as follows:

Completed

  • Publication of the 1st volume of the ECOWAS Sustainable Energy Journal
  • Publication of the 2nd volume of the ECOWAS Sustainable Energy Journal

On going

  • Implementation of research projects in the field of sustainable energy or related fields in regional and international consortiums.
  • Support for the publication of quality scientific articles.
  • Operationalization of the network of ECREEE academic and scientific partners.

Under Preparation

  • Conducting technology transfer actions in partnership with industries and companies at regional and international level.
  • Support for the establishment or operationalization of incubators and technopoles.

Appropriate models and quality scientific publications in the field of sustainable energy and related fields are available and are used.

Technologies appropriated for the region are developed and used.
